You don’t have to travel far from Edinburgh to experience a typical Scottish rural landscape. Our Sky to Sea bike tour starts to the South of Edinburgh, high up at the foot of the picturesque Pentland Hills. Following the course of the city’s river, ‘The Water of Leith’, our route meanders across Edinburgh using subterranean ancient transport links, which once threaded their way across this industrious city, eventually arriving at what was once Scotland’s busiest port, The Port of Leith.

Route Description:

Our tour begins in the foothills of the Pentland Hills with a panoramic view of Edinburgh, before joining the ancient routes of the Caledonian Railway, Union Canal and Water of Leith, These transport routes, which were once used to carry goods from the 90 or so mills situated along the city’s main river and to haul coal from further afield, conveniently pass through much of Edinburgh’s wilder green space and a string of quaint villages such as Colinton, Dean and Stockbridge.

The Sky to Sea tour also visits the Port of Leith, a vibrant and historic ancient harbour with plenty of exciting waterside bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as being a home for our Queen’s favourite ship the Royal Yacht Britannia. Here you will have the option to stay and explore Leith or return by bicycle to the city centre via the New Town..
